Madurai is the oldest city in the Indian Peninsula. It is situated in the South Indian State,Tamil Nadu. Madurai is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu next to Chennai. Madurai is also known as the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. Madurai is in existence from Pre-Christian era. In BC 3 Megasthenes visited Madurai. It was followed by visits of many Romans and Greeks. They established flourishing trades with the Pandyan Kings of Madurai. No wonder Madurai is known as the Athens of East. The city is situated on the right banks of the river Vaigai. The city is surrounded by three hills. A hill having resemblance to elephant is called 'Elephant hill' (Yanai malai in Tamil).The other two hills resemble a cow and snake. They are known as Cow Hill(Pasu malai in Tamil) and Snake hill (Naga malai in Tamil).The Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple is in the center of the city .The city of Madurai is built around this temple. The presiding deities are Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy . Lord Shiva in Madurai is known as Sundareswarar and Goddess Parvathy is known as Meenakshi. The legend says Lord Shiva married Goddess Meenakshi at Madurai.Rectangular streets surround the temple symbolizing the cosmos. Madurai is also known for its jasmine flowers. Jasmine perfumes made from Madurai jasmine flowers are internationally renowned. Madurai jasmine has a special fragrance. Another specialty of Madurai is its 24 x 7 wayside catering services.
